My son Wyatt is a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan, so when I started thinking about what project I could make for him, I ultimately settled on something related to the franchise.
This helmet is modeled after a much smaller die-cast helmet you can buy online. The die-cast helmet is about 1.5" tall. My final helmet is actually huge and absolutely wearable!
Made from craft foam, cotton batting, and Creature Cast liquid latex rubber, this project took about 3 months to complete.
The base is solid black walnut, and the stand is made from galvanized threaded pipe from the local big box store. I used my drill press to drill a 1/2" hole into a softball, then mounted the ball atop the stand. The softball and stand were treated to the same weathering and layering technique as the helmet.
The weathering effect is achieved using liquid latex rubber, along with cotton batting. Once that dried, I started applying layers of paints to build up a variety of mudding, blood soaked layers.
